Journey

From the loom town to every town.

100+ years of one Rayadurg family in the saree trade, from the grandparentsโ€™ time to Kenche Ramesh today.

  1. 01

    100+ years

    A family in the trade

The Kenche family has been in the saree trade for 100+ years, since the time of the grandparents. The family name, Kenche Mallikarjuna, is on the logo, on every box, and on every set that leaves Rayadurg.

  2. 02

    The loom town

    Rayadurg

A town on the border of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, where weaving is part of everyday work. The sarees start here, close to the looms.

  3. 03

    The craft

    One thread at a time

Most sarees are woven on power looms, where a jacquard keeps every zari motif exact; some on handlooms. Either way the warp is set on the loom, the weft passed across thread by thread, the zari border worked in as the cloth grows.

  4. 04

    The set

    Twenty-eight to a box

Sarees are checked, folded and boxed in sets of twenty-eight, so a shop can fill its shelves with one order.

  5. 05

    The road

    Across India

What began with shops nearby now travels by parcel to towns across India.

  6. 06

    Today

    Kenche Ramesh

Today the house is run by Kenche Ramesh. New weaves are filmed on the floor and shared on Instagram as they arrive, and enquiries on WhatsApp are answered personally.
